Carolina Hurricanes Hand the Arizona Coyotes Their Eighth Loss Straight 5-1, 2/16/24

   The Arizona Coyotes had lost their eighth game straight against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, February 16th. Pyotr Kochetkov made 30 saves for Carolina in a 5-1 win. Karel Vejmelka had been replaced by Matt Villalta, who made four saves in his NHL debut.

   Only 16 seconds into the first period, Jordan Martinook scored his ninth goal of the season and gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead early. Martinook scored on the rebound of Brady Skjei's shot from along the left-side boards... Martinook got the puck in the net with a backhanded shot. Off a wraparound by Martin Necas, Jalen Chatfield struck his fifth goal of the season to extend Carolina's lead to 2-0. Dylan Guenther cut it 2-1 with the lone goal for Arizona late into the first frame. Before Guenther's breakaway goal, Logan Cooley had prevented Carolina from taking control of the puck in the neutral zone.


   At 13:32 of the second period, Seth Jarvis pushed it to 3-1. Jarvis had gotten ahold of the puck from a pass by Travis Dermott, who intended to send the puck over to Nick Schmaltz... however, the puck deflected to Jarvis in the left circle and he scored a one-timer. Teuvo Teravainen struck his 17th of the season later in the middle frame to get the Canes a three-goal lead on the power play. After Karel Vejmelka saved Jack Drury's one-timer in the slot, Teravainen put in a rebound at the left post.


   Michael Bunting scored a backhanded shot at 15:23 of the final frame. Bunting scored the backhand from the slot for a 5-1 final.




Notes:

- Both Jack Drury and Martin Necas recorded two assists

- Karel Vejmelka made 21 saves before getting replaced by Matt Villalta, who made four saves in his NHL debut.
