Pittsburgh Penguins Claimed Washington Capitals Foward, Matthew Phillips 2/16/24

 





   Matthew Phillips was signed through the 2023-24 season... his contract carries an average value, annual, of $775,000 at the NHL level.

Phillips spent the 2023-24 campaign with the Washington Capitals, appearing in 27 games. He recorded one goal, four assists, and five points - he scored his first career NHL goal as well as notched his first multi-point effort against the Calgary Flames on the 16th of October.

He had spent three parts of the season in the NHL between both the Capitals and the Flames... recording five points in 30 career NHL games.


   Matthew Phillips stood out at AHL level - He recorded 237 points in 265 AHL games... his best season was the 2022-23 season when he achieved AHL career highs in goals. He recorded 36 goals, 40 assists, and 76 points. Phillips played parts of six seasons, both with the Stockton Heat and the Calgary Wranglers... he was also labeled an AHL All-Star in 2020 and 2023.

Before he was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 2016 NHL Draft -  Phillips had an outstanding career with the Victoria Royals, WHL, in 2015-18. He served as the captain in the 2017-18 season... he recorded a total of 136 goals, 145 assists, and 281 points in just 215 WHL career games.
