Penguins Secure 2nd Straight Victory Against Flyers

  After dropping the first three games to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Pittsburgh Penguins are officially making things interesting. The Penguins secured their second straight victory in Game 5 on Monday at PPG Paints Arena, defeating the Flyers in a nail-biting 3-2 win to keep their season alive. Sidney Crosby fueled the comeback with a pair of assists, while Elmer Soderblom, Connor Dewar, and Kris Letang each found the back of the net. Following a 4-2 win in Game 4, Pittsburgh has now cut the series lead to 3-2 and will look to force a decisive Game 7 when they travel back to Philadelphia on Wednesday. Rangers Made a Comeback Against the Islanders and Won 6-5 in Overtime, 2/18/24

   The New York Rangers extended their win streak to a season-high seven games when they defeated the New York Islanders 6-5 in overtime during the Stadium Series game on Sunday, February 18th. Artemi Panarin scored 10 seconds into overtime to wrap it up.

   The Rangers opened the scoring - Erik Gustafsson early into the first period, recording his fifth goal of the season. Gustafsson shot from the point, the puck hit off Ilya Sorokin's shoulder and deflected into the net. Brock Nelson tied it 1-1, shooting from the right circle... Bo Horvat put the Islanders ahead, 2-1, not much long after Nelson's goal, at 12:42 of the first frame. At 12:26, Mat Barzal extended the Islanders' lead to 3-1 on the power play, just 16 seconds later. Nelson passed the puck to Barzal, deflecting the puck into the net as he was falling to the ice.


   Anders Lee pushed it to a 4-1 lead for the Islanders at 18:57 of the second period. Lee tipped in a shot from Pierre Engvall on the power play, recording his 14th goal of the season. Vincent Trocheck cut it at 4-2 on the power play, deflecting Artemi Panarin's shot... Trocheck then made it 4-3 off a rebound.


   At 18:07 of the third period, Alexander Romanov struck his sixth goal of the season and gave the Islanders a 5-3 lead. Romanov scored off a rebound at the side of the net. Chris Kreider put it at 5-4 on the power play while the Rangers had an empty net with a redirection... Mika Zibanejad tied it at 5-5, also while they had the empty net, at 1:01 remaining. The Rangers and Islanders head into overtime to determine the game-winner of the Stadium Series.


   Artemi Panarin is quick to call it wraps in overtime! Panarin stuck his 32nd goal of the season just 10 seconds into overtime for a 6-5 final.




Notes:

- Matt Rempe made his NHL debut... He is the first player in NHL history to make his debut in an outdoor game.

- Both Brock Nelson's and Mat Barzal's goals were the fastest two goals by one team in an NHL outdoor game... Dobson's second assist was his 50th of the season in his 54th game

- Vincent Trocheck scored two goals and had an assist... Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists. Alexis Lafreniere and Adam Fox recorded two assists each.

- Igor Shesterkin made 36 saves for the Rangers and Ilya Sorokin made 32 saves for the Islanders.

- Ryan Lindgren left the game with an upper-body injury after one shift and did not make a return... He was said to still be getting evaluated.
