Carolina Hurricanes Put an End to Bruins Win Streak 4/9/24

   The Bruins had a great four-game win streak that unfortunately was put to an end when they hosted the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, April 9th. They were defeated with a 4-1 score, Charlie McAvoy scored the lone goal for Boston. Carolina only extended their streak to three straight games, following a 4-1 loss to the Bruins on April 4th. The Bruins will be taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, a team whose been trying their hardest to get a wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

   The first period was completely scoreless until it appeared that Martin Necas scored to put Carolina in a 1-0 lead on a sharp-angle shot. However, it had been waved off an official review.


   Andrei Svechnikov put the Hurricanes in a 1-0 lead at 9:05 of the second period with a lacrosse-style goal from behind the net. It was Svechnikov's 19th goal of the season (49 points; 19 goals, 30 assists). Pushing it to 2-0 at 6:55, Teuvo Teravainen recorded his 23rd goal of the season when he tapped in a centering pass from Svechnikov at the doorstep. With 3:04 remaining in the middle frame, Charlie McAvoy fired home his 12th of the season to pull the Bruins within 2-1 from the left circle off a one-timer.


   Jake Guentzel scored his sixth as a Hurricane to extend the lead to 3-1 at 9:46 of the third. Pavel Zacha went in to attempt to clear the puck, but it got in off Jeremy Swayman's right leg after Guentzel shot at the left side and it glided past Swayman. Guentzel extended his point streak to six games (four goals, six assists), and he currently has 22 points (six goals, 16 assists) in just 15 games since he was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 7th. At 6:38, Seth Jarvis put in a short-handed goal for the 4-1 final, rebounding off his original with a wraparound off the rush. This was Jarvis' 30th goal of the season, which is the first time he's reached this mark.




Trent Frederic on the Bruins' 4-1 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes: "I think we got them last time pretty good in their barn. Seemed like they came ready to play, got to give them credit. It was a tough-checking game to start and it seemed like they kind of took over a little more in the second, and obviously some more in the third too."


Jeremy Swayman on what the Hurricanes do effectively: "I think they're well-coached and they have a great team, we just have to accept that. It's obviously not something we want to do in our home barn, but I think it's good for us moving forward and understanding that no team's going to be soft enough just because they have four games left in the season. So, it's our job to get punched in the face and get back up, and that's what we did tonight."


Charlie McAvoy on the Bruins going into playoffs soon and the 4-1 loss: "I feel good. This is just one game tonight. It's hard to win in this league and it was a grind overall. I think we've displayed how we can play, tonight we just didn't do enough of it, but I think we've been working towards our game. Every team's going to have a loss, we happened to have that tonight. They played better than us and definitely well enough to win. Overall, I think we've been building and we've been working good."




Notes:

- Jeremy Swayman made a total of 22 saves for Boston.

- The Bruins are first in the Atlantic Division and are three points ahead of the Florida Panthers, who defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-0 on Tuesday.

- Jaccob Slavin recorded two assists, and Pyotr Kochetkov made a total of 22 saves for Carolina.

- The Carolina Hurricanes have pulled within three points of the New York Rangers, who took a 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday, for first in the Metropolitan Division.

- Andrei Svechnikov's lacrosse-style goal had been his third in his NHL career, tying Trevor Zegras for the most in the NHL.

- The Carolina Hurricanes have reached 50 wins for the third consecutive season... this is the first time they've accomplished this feat since the Detroit Red Wings had four consecutive 50-win seasons from 2005-06 to 2008-09.
