Woll’s Shutout Leads Leafs Past Devils in Toronto

On Tuesday in Toronto, the Maple Leafs hosted the Devils, handing New Jersey their fourth straight loss when the Leafs and Joseph Woll shutout the Devils 4-0. Woll put on an incredible performance, making a total of 33 saves for Toronto. Bobby McMann, Nicolas Roy, Calle Jarnkrok, and Matthew Knies each found the back of the net for the Leafs, while Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves in a difficult losing effort. It was a good win for the Leafs after they lost to the Detroit Red Wings in overtime on Sunday. The Devils head to Columbus on Wednesday to take on the Blue Jackets in hopes of snapping this four-game skid.

Late in the first frame with 5:39 to go, Bobby McMann opened the scoring to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead on a power play. He took a pass from Nicholas Robertson, who gloved down a clearing attempt by Ondrej Palat at the blue line before passing across to McMann, who scored blocker side from the high slot for his 12th goal of the season.

Nicolas Roy made it 2-0 with his fourth goal of the season late in the second period at 5:36. He scored one second after the power play expired, and he was at the right post to tap it in past Jacob Markstrom's left pad after McMann's redirection of a pass by Robertson was going wide of the net.

Calle Jarnkrok found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season to push it to 3-0 at 13:25 of the third period when he got the puck from Steven Lorentz. He shot from the slot, and it deflected in off Jonas Siegenthaler. With 2:59 left to play, Matthew Knies struck the empty New Jersey net for the 4-0 final. It was his third straight game with a goal. Knies has 11 goals so far this season.

Notes:

- The Maple Leafs played without captain Auston Matthews after suffering a lower-body injury when he blocked a shot with his foot in a 3-2 overtime loss on Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings. He's day-to-day. The team was also without both William Nylander (lower body) and Chris Tanev (lower body).

- Bobby McMann and Nicolas Roy both recorded a goal and an assist, and Nicholas Robertson picked up a pair of assists.

- Toronto is 18-15-6, and are 3-0-1 in their past four games.

- New Jersey is 20-17-2, and are 0-3-1 in their past four games.

- In the first period, Ondrej Palat was denied by Joseph Woll when he one-timed a pass from Jack Hughes. When the Maple Leafs had a 2-0 lead, Woll preserved that lead when he reached back with his stick, pulling the puck off the goal line following a stuff attempt from Nico Hischier.
