Korpisalo And The Bruins Shutout The Penguins 1-0

 

At TD Garden on Sunday, the Bruins continued their winning ways, grinding out a tough 1-0 victory to hand the Penguins their second straight loss. The Penguins had been one of the hottest teams in the league recently, but their six-game winning streak was snapped yesterday against the Calgary Flames. While Pittsburgh's offense has gone cold over the last 48 hours, Boston's disciplined play pushed its own winning streak to three games. For the Penguins, it was a frustrating evening of missed opportunities, and they simply couldn't find the equalizer before the final horn. Viktor Arvidsson netted the lone goal of the contest, and Joonas Korpisalo was perfect in net, making 27 saves for his first shutout of the season and the eighth of his career.

In the opening period at 15:03, it appeared that Sean Kuraly scored for the Bruins to give them a 1-0 lead; however, the play was ruled no goal after review. Tanner Jeannot fired from the bottom of the right face-off circle, and his shot rebounded off Stuart Skinner and then Kuraly's right glove in front. It was determined that Kuraly had punched the puck into the net. With 9:00 on the clock, Viktor Arvidsson found the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season to give Boston a 1-0 lead when he snuck a backhander off the left post before it bounced in the back of the net off the right leg of Skinner after outmuscling Erik Karlsson and kicking a rebound off Henri Jokiharju's shot from the point onto his stick.

Jonathan Aspirot preserved the one-goal lead for the Bruins in the final minutes of the second period when he blocked a point-blank, quality scoring chance.

Notes:

- Viktor Arvidsson has 22 points this season so far: 9 goals and 13 assists. In his past five games, he's picked up two goals and three assists.

- Stuart Skinner made a total of 17 saves for Pittsburgh.

- The Bruins (25-19-2) have won five of their past six (5-1-0), including their 10-2 victory against the New York Rangers on Saturday.

- The Penguins are 21-14-9.

- On the power play, Boston was 0-for-6 while Pittsburgh was 0-for-2.

- Boston played without Morgan Geekie due to a family matter, and he's expected to return to the lineup when they host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. Taking his place, Michael Eyssimont played on the third line with Alex Steeves and Fraser Minten.

- Jonathan Aspirot signed a two-year contract extension earlier in the day through the 2027-28 season with an annual cap hit of $887,500.

- Kevin Hayes, a Boston native, skated in his 800th NHL game, and Connor Clifton skated in his 400th NHL game.

- Matt MacPherson officiated his 1,000th game. He was honored during a pregame ceremony.
