Jack Hughes Nets Golden Goal as Team USA Downs Canada for Olympic Gold

The 46-year-old wait is over. Team USA captured the Olympic gold medal dramatically on Sunday, defeating Canada 2-1 in a sudden-death overtime thriller at Santagiulia Arena. After a scoreless stalemate for much of the game, Jack Hughes cemented his place in hockey history by snapping home the "Golden Goal" 1:41 into the extra period. The Americans got on the board six minutes into the first period thanks to a highlight-reel goal from Matt Boldy, but Canada’s Cale Makar eventually found the equalizer late in the second to set the stage for the overtime heroics. While Hughes provided the finish, the story of the game was Connor Hellebuyck, who stood tall under a relentless Canadian onslaught, making 41 saves to secure the United States' first men's gold since the 1980 "Miracle on Ice." Canada takes home the silver after a hard-fought battle that lived up to every bit of the cross-border hype.

Matt Boldy opened the scoring at 14:00 of the first when he flipped the puck between Cale Makar and Devon Toews, gained position on the latter, then deked to his backhand before sliding the puck past Jordan Binnington to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. This was the fastest goal to start a gold medal game in an Olympics with NHL players.

Late in the second period, Makar tied things up 1-1 to get Canada on the board with 1:44 to go in the frame. Right off a face-off win for the Canadians, the puck found its way to Toews, who sent a cross-ice pass to Makar, who skated into the face-off circle and picked the corner off a snap shot. Canada outshot the U.S. in the second, 19-8.

After a scoreless third period with 14 saves made by Connor Hellebuyck, Jack Hughes fired a wrister past Binnington, scoring the golden goal at 1:41 of overtime for the U.S. after taking a pass from Zach Werenski, who stripped Nathan MacKinnon of the puck in the right face-off circle before handing it over to Hughes for the 2-1 final.
