After a scoreless opening frame, the Canadians got on the board first, only 54 seconds into the second period, when Kristin O'Neill took a pass from Laura Stacey, who grabbed the puck off an American turnover before O'Neill came into play to join the rush. Stacey squeezed the puck to O'Neill, who skated in alone, deked on Aerin Frankel, and tucked the puck in the empty side of the net to make it 1-0.

It wasn't until 2:04 remained in the third period that Hilary Knight tied the game 1-1, forcing unlimited overtime, three-on-three. Lalia Edwards got the puck from Megan Keller before firing from the point, and Knight tipped it in front to get the Americans on the board.

With 5:53 on the clock in overtime, Keller scored the golden goal for the Americans. Taylor Heise received the puck from Claire Thompson before sending a long pass to Keller, whose shot dribbled between Ann-Renee Desbiens' pads for the 2-1 overtime victory.
